'Jürgen Müller was a self-taught amateur musician who, while studying oceanic science at the University of Kiel, purchased some electronic instruments and set up a mobile studio on his house boat, docked along the town of Heikendorf, on the North Sea. He held a life-long fascination with the ocean, the expansive and endless inner-space of the deep, where he felt many ecological miracles had yet to be discovered, and which kindled a love for the unknown. This love of all things nautical started early in his youth and eventually led him to study the oceanic sciences.

For one week in 1979 Jürgen took up with a film crew on a mission to document some sea-water toxicity testing that was being performed by a couple of notable biologists, only a few kilometers off the shore. This was to air as a special later to be viewed in universities. Jürgen went to take notes for a course, but soon found himself instead moved by the surroundings more in an artistically inspired sense than a scientific one. He found the mystery and romance of the great seas to be quite moving, and then decided rather abruptly that he would make music to capture this feeling.

Utilizing only a handful of barely-remembered childhood piano lessons, Jürgen set about creating his marine-influenced vignettes with some electronic instruments he had gathered through friends, as well as borrowing some new equipment from a local school’s music department. As a general music lover, earlier in the '70s he had taken note of several avant garde electronic composers who he felt simultaneously captured a purity of sound and sense of wonder that was lacking in other music. He dreamt of fusing this ideal with the synthetic recreations of nature. In a sense, one could say he stumbled onto an early “new age” aesthetic through pure ignorance and coincidence.

Mixing relaxing ambient tones and spooky otherworldly sounds, he came up with a unique approach. After filling several reels of home recordings he held ambitions of becoming a film composer. He decided to start his own publishing company, Neue Wissenschaft, and hoped to compose albums in order to sell as production music to various film companies for use in documentaries and television programs. As he was simultaneously hard at work on his studies to finish school, he had to work on his music in short intervals, and often had to put it aside altogether. As a result, it took several years for him to actually realize his sole full-length recording, Science of the Sea, the sessions for which began in late 1981, before finishing a year later. Less than 100 copies were pressed, and few of them were even sent out to potential clients. Most copies were eventually given to friends and family.

Jürgen’s musical gamble never quite paid off as he had hoped, and without any outside interest or connections in the music world, he soon abandoned any dreams of a musical existence and instead chose to further his oceanographic career.

Remastered from the original tapes by Brad Rose with help from Norman Chambers. Cut to vinyl at D+M Berlin and pressed in Germany. Initial copies on transparent orange vinyl.'

"Formed in 1969, Electronic Music Studios (EMS) quickly became innovators for the recording, production and advancement of electronic music. The ideas and designs that bubbled forth out of the ingenuitive minds of Peter Zinovieff, Tristram Cary, David Cockerell and others, led to the creation of some of the most wildly original musical/sound design equipment ever conceived. The VCS3, Synthi A + AKS, Synthi 100, Synthi E, Synthi Logik and the Soundbeam are among these, almost unworldly, devices.

It is often said EMS gear has attained cult status, reaching a fervor of near worship among its users. The Synthi Group is an example and collection of such users. United through the Synthi blog and forum (www.thesynthi.de) and located throughout the world, the group's members have come together for a planned series of compilation volume releases where the individuality and approach of each member towards their EMS instrument is showcased and broadcasted for all to experience. The listener will hear wildly different examples of styles and sounds that this original, and oft times, vintage equipment can create.

EMS were true pioneers from the very beginning, always looking beyond the culture and times they were surrounded and seemingly trapped in. Still around today, thanks to Robin Wood and Ludwig Rehberg, they are one of the few companies involved with electronic instrument production that have had a continued run since their inception. The Synthi Group have honed the original pioneering spirit and DIY ethic of EMS with their Volume series, a collection of sounds encompassing beautiful dreamscapes, synaesthetic visions, dark ambience, aural abstractions, sonic absurdities, pulsating analog, glitch, ring modulators, and envelope shapers generating trapezoidal geometry. 1. Matthew Dear - Black City (Ghostly International)
I really needed a good pop album for the summer. This was on repeat for months, and with good reasons: highly addictive song-writing and vocal delivery, surreal sound-design, quirky and great hooks, sorrowful, soulful, dark, funky. And that vocal layering...Up there with my favorite pop albums of all time.

2. Gonjasufi - A Sufi And A Killer (Warp)
I don't know what's the problem with music in these post-internet times, and i will probably never understand. I try to keep myself away from internet hype as much as possible and so far, everything works well in my own little world. Just trusting my instincts, listening rather than reading about music. And my instincts tell me this is music with soul, a rare thing these days.

3. Luke Abbott - Holkham Drones (Border Community)

This summer, i got invited to play at NachtDigital festival, which hosted a *gasp* Border Community all-star lineup. This album wasn't released yet, and i really didn't know what to expect from a Luke Abbott live set. Well, he started playing, and it was magic - electronica that's made to be enjoyed and understood outdoors, his tunes really came alive in a location like Olganitz. British leftfield stuff, mesmerising and awe-inspiring. Easily the festival's highlight set, and with a highly personal sound.

4. Caribou - Swim (City Slang)

Dan Snaith's voice. Dan Snaith's lyrics. Dan Snaith's warm, fuzzy sounds. His retro-modern sensibility. His cross-over with dance music. Highly infectious, grainy dance music. A masterpiece.

5. Actress - Splazsh (Honest Jon's)
Unclassifiable, strange, out-of-time. Like all exciting music should be. His live set has some really out-there tunes, also.

6. James Holden - DJ Kicks (K7)
Not much to say that i haven't said before about Holden's musical vision. He plays exactly the dance music i want to listen to, at home or in a club.

7. Shackleton - Fabric 55 (Fabric)
I could go on and on about Shackleton, his artistic honesty, personality, and musical ideas, but i won't. You can check out his feature in this month's Wire magazine, or this RA interview. Again, this is the kind of music i really want to dance to.

8. Ikonika - Contact, Love, Want, Have (Hyperdub)
Wasn't really feeling this at home, until i saw the girl play a live set.

9. Four Tet - There Is Love In You (Domino)
Wasn't really feeling this either, until i heard the tunes in a club.

10. Emeralds - Does It Look Like I'm Here (Mego)
A modern kosmische album that doesn't really bring anything new - still beautiful music nonetheless.

Just finished reading the greek version of David Prudhomme's multi-awarded "Rebetiko - Bad Weeds" graphic novel and i can't recommend it enough. Really cheap, too - for a hardcover. From the artist's blog, i picked up a nice BBC documentary on Rebetika narrated by Anthony Quinn that somehow eluded me. Perfect dinner-time watch.

[...] Madlib has become one of the most diverse and prolific artists in hiphop. He made his underground cross-genre breakthrough as his wayward, apocryphal alter-ego Quasimoto; and his other major projects include Beat Konducta's curated collections of MC tools; his one-man virtual jazz band Yesterday's New Quintet and its spin-offs, in which he contributes drums, keyboards, bass and vibraphone; and his collaborations with the late J Dilla (Jaylib) and MF Doom (Madvillain). Madlib's work traverses modern-day hiphop to an extent that few can claim, and his crate-digging has reached such depths as to make him a veritable crate in himself, providing others with scores of tracks to help construct their own tunes. Yet for all the success his workaholism has brought him, he is a reticent public figure.

As with the American childhood word game that is the source of his name, Madlib slots recognisable sounds or phrases into new contexts. While any sample-based music can accomplish this, the level of love and knowledge that surrounds his work establishes some truly admirable credentials.

"You'll find something good in every type of music. [The music is] either good or it's bad, but you can find something. I've noticed that. You'll tell in years. I'm trying to do all types of music, to connect with everybody. Eskimos, everybody, you know what i'm saying? I know music can make people come together. Even aliens, probably come together with aliens on some music. So i look at my shows and i see all types of different races - i just know, that's the thing. I can communicate with everybody. "

"All the music i do, i have to like it. I wouldn't really care if nobody else liked it. I just have to feel it first. I love that people like it, though. I wouldn't really trip if nobody ever liked it, cause i'm doing it for my health first."

Just as [James] Brown churned out root funk lines, so Madlib in his Beat Konducta guise manufactures hiphop readymades for future generations of MCs and producers; he's a breaks conservationist and protector of hiphop's future, stockpiling natural resources of the music.

"I found that a lot of dudes write good lyrics over certain beats i do. So i try to put that out there for the world cause i know there are a lot of MCs out there, and off of one beat you can get a lot of ideas. [...] So i put it out there so they can write a good record first."

Madlib's musical generosity isn't always reciprocated. he has been sued for his use of samples by a number of artists he respects.

"I understand, 'cause they probably broke. [...] But then they ask for a little too much, they think we're Jay-Z or something. [...] I hope somebody samples me. Sample my shit. I ain't gonna sue you. Sample me, please! Make some good music. Make something i can listen to. "

Elektro Guzzi Live

I've posted about the mighty Elektro Guzzi before (here and here) - they're an awesome live band from Austria with a traditional guitar/bass/drums structure, but the catch is that their sound rather resembles minimal techno and modern dance music (albeit with a more sophisticated sound design) than boring rock strumming.

So this wednesday the Six D.O.G.S. venue celebrates a year of successful events in art and music by bringing the boys over to play, and i'll be on the warm-up DJ duties - very excited, needless to say. After-show slots are occupied by Pan (one of the ενtechno festival masterminds) and Mr Statik who'll spin some nice tech-house and techno until dawn. Just be there!
